Lefkada

The unique island of Lefkada, also known and as Lefkas,is the fourth biggest island of the Ionion Sea,separated by the municipality of Aitoloakarnania by a lagoon. The name was given because of the white cliffs found at the Cape Lefkatas by Homer itself. On this Cape, you can find the ruins of the ancient temple of Apollo.
Being so close to the mainland,Lefkada is connected to it by a drawbridge above the channel and a bridge above the lagoon. Thanks to those bridges, Lefkada is the only greek island that can be reached by road.
Nine satellite islands surround Lefkada: Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Madouri, Skorpidi, Skorpios, Thilia, Petalou, and Kythros.Skorpios is the most famous among those islands for being a private island of the famous Greek ship owner Aristotelis Onasis. Tourism came in the 1960′s, when the international press gathered on the island to be close to the shipping magnate Onassis and his wife Jackie.
Lefkada is also the birthplace of world famous artists, like the opera singer Agnes Baltsa, the writer Angelos Sikelianos, nominated for the Nobel literary prize twice, Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, better known as Yacumo Coizumi. We should not also forget the poet Aristotelis Valaoritis, who was also born in Lefkada,an distinguished greek writer.
Sports & nature
One of the seven Ionian Islands in the west of Greece, Lefkas (or Lefkada) is renowned for its mountainous landscape, beautiful beaches and lush green vegetation. Over 70% of the island is mountainous providing a playground of tracks and trails for keen mountain bikers. The island is largely unknown and therefore has been able to keep its charm and traditions, so landscapes are rugged and tracks untouched. All this plus some of the best beaches in Greece coupled with famous kite-surfing and wind-surfing spots; the island attracts visitors from all over the world.
Nightlife info

Night clubs and bars are found mainly in the capital, as well as in the most popular tourist resorts, Nydri and Vassiliki. You will not be disappointed by Lefkas' nightlife!
Culture and history info
Lefkada is an island with a wide spiritual tradition. Its geographical position - like all the others islands of Ionian Sea - obtained a closer relationship with the West, in the years where all Continental Greece had been experiencing the spiritual Middle Age of Turkish Domination.
The temperamental Heptanisian culture and the unique feature of the island, full of “breath of the sea, breath of the pine trees” gave to Lefkada the opportunity to give birth and nurture some of the most sensitive poetic souls. In this island, were born or were springs, eminent artists and scientists with Pan-Hellenic recognition and international appreciation and publicity. Agriculture had been for centuries the most important occupation of Lefkada’s inhabitants and the greatest activity which ensured their survival. The most favorite and profitable one, was the cultivation of olive - mostly on the plains - and the viniculture - on the highlands of the island- an activity which had been adored from the ancient times. Many writers - like Plinios the senior (23-79 a.c) and the Athineos (160-250 a.c) the writer of “Deipnosophistae” - referred the famous wine of Lefkada. Except from agriculture, other profitable activities, are stock breeding, fishing, trade and practical crafts of everyday life.
The agriculture and stock breeding activities helped to arise and stabilized, by creating their own tradition, occupations which had been self evident in the small agricultural societies: The ploughman, the reaper, the thresher, the miller, the oil presser, the digger, the chimney man. The rest of the traditional occupations: the cobblers, the cooper, the blacksmith, the tailor, the merchant - had been completing and framing the leading occupations of the families.
